December 2005,
Located in Northeast Minneapolis, Mid-Continent Engineering Inc. is a veteran owned certified small business. Mid-Continent is truly unique in that it is vertically integrated and can perform heat treat, paint , chem. film, prototyping, assembly and machining in its 130,000 square foot facility.
Founded in 1949 by Art Popehn, the company was acquired by Charles “ Chuck” Marvin in 1977 where he grew the company from $3.2 million annually, to an estimated $29 million in 2006. Chuck continued to run the day to day operations of Mid-Continent until his son, Sanders Marvin took the reins 2004. Chuck is still the chairman of the company and can be seen walking the shop floors almost every day.
According to Sanders Marvin, MCE’s President and COO, the company sets itself apart from the competition because of its ability to produce very complex, critical assemblies under one roof and is ISO 9001-2001/ISO 9001-2000 and NADCAP certified. “ Our goal is to be the preferred supplier of the most intricate and complex assemblies to the US Military and its Prime suppliers”. Mid-Continent implements lean manufacturing practices supported by several Kaizen events annually to focus on lead time, set up reduction and overall process improvement. This effort is championed by Sanders and his senior management group.
The company is an award winning provider for the Health Care, Aerospace and Defense industries and is proud to count among its customers: GE Medical, Perkin Elmer, Boeing Aerospace, Vought Aircraft , Cirrus Aircraft, Lockheed Martin, United Defense/BAE, Raytheon, General Dynamics, and Rockwell Collins.
